A Fire in My Bones
Leonardo da Vinci is credited with saying, “Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.” Unfortunately, he never said those words in life; instead, the original version of this quote was written by John H. Secondari as part of the script for his documentary on da Vinci in 1965. He felt that these words were something that someone as fascinated by flight as da Vinci could have said. And these words are undoubtedly true. It’s been said that you never have to wonder if someone is a pilot; they’ll tell you! I love introducing people to the wonders of aviation. Just last night, I had the privilege of taking a couple for their first flight in a small airplane. Watching their nervousness be overcome by joy and excitement and listening to their newborn passion for the miracle of flight is one of the joys of being a pilot.
You know, each of us has something even more captivating than flight to share with others. We find these words from the prophet Jeremiah after he had met with resistance to his ministry. “Then I said, ‘I will not make mention of Him, Nor speak anymore in His name.’ But His word was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not” (Jeremiah 20:9). Just as those who have tasted flight cannot remain grounded and feel a need to share that passion with those they come in contact with, those who have heard the word of God and experienced His love cannot keep silent about it. His words burn in our bones until we tell everyone about what Jesus has done for us. If you’ve experienced His love for you, won’t you share it with someone today?
